Yeast Infection Symptoms

For most women, yeast infections are a fact of life. Once you’ve had a yeast infection, you’ll be able to distinguish when you have another in the future. Unfortunately, many women have multiple yeast infections over their entire lives.

Yeast infections have very well defined symptoms, but sometimes the symptoms can bee confused for other vaginal infections. We will go over each of these and distinguish them from each other.

Common Symptoms
Yeast infections’ most trademark symptom is burning and itching around the vaginal area. You can also experience burning within the vagina, especially after sexual intercourse. Burning around the vaginal area is usually from excessive itching and skin irritation. If you urinate and feel burning around your vagina, then you probably have a yeast infection. The yeast within the vagina can be very irritating to the sensitive tissue inside. Burning and pain within the vagina is not from itching but from bacteria overload.

It’s important to note that there’s another condition that can cause burning and itching around the vaginal area. This is noninfectious vaginosis. If you douche or use a lot of perfume, then chances are you have noninfectious vaginosis- not a yeast infection. Also, you won’t have the other symptoms of a yeast infection.

Another symptom is a white discharge that looks like cottage cheese. Really, any change in your discharge should always be investigated by a doctor. Yeast infections usually have white discharge that’s clumpy. Don’t confuse this discharge with ovulation discharge, which is white and extremely smooth.

If you have a greenish discharge, then you may have Trichomoniasis. This is an infectious disease that can also create a frothy discharge. If you experience this symptom, please see a doctor as soon as you can.

If you have a discharge that’s fishy-smelling, this is not a yeast infection. This is bacterial vaginosis, which is an imbalance between good and bad bacteria in the vagina. It’s not an explosion of yeast bacteria but it’s very easy to confuse the two syndromes. Another trademark symptom of bacterial vaginosis is a grey discharge (not white or yellow).

Pain during sexual intercourse can also signal a yeast infection. During a yeast infection the vagina is very irritated. Sexual intercourse can be extremely painful simply because there’s so much friction involved! Having sex during a yeast infection can feel like you’re rubbing a raw wound.

Diagnosing your yeast infection is the first step to curing it. And the sooner you recognize which symptoms are unique to your body, you can be better prepared for future infections. Yeast infections are common and easily treated as long as they are diagnosed early. By following this symptom guide you are equipped to recognize the flags that signal you may have a yeast infection.
